Modest Beauty

As Ramadhan and Hari Raya approach, the Islamic community is once again under the annual spotlight. What used to be unfashionable stereotypes of the female Muslims’ wardrobe have now been substituted with stunning fashion pieces that cater especially to those who chose to remain passionate about their faith but at the same time divulge into intricate designs resembling mainstream non-religious based fashion. As Muslims all over the world prepare for this auspicious month and celebrations that are sure to follow, Convergence takes a modest glance into the many events and gatherings that are organized by a flourishing business – the Islamic Fashion Industry.

Islamic Fashion Festival, Kuala Lumpur

Birthed by Dato’ Raja Reza, of Kelantanese Royalty, the Islamic Fashion will be held in November in Kuala Lumpur for the 6th consecutive year. With its tagline, “Discovering the Beauty of Modesty”, the IFF carries with it its vision to break myths of an archaic and ill-adapted faith by bringing together different concepts and ideas via its multi-religious and multicultural participants. They also strive to enliven the audience, sparking their curiosity to learn more about Islam and at the same time offering a channel for significant exchange in the celebration of beauty in diversity whilst building an awareness of and an appreciation for the inherent beauty and diversity of Islamic fashion and culture. The IFF also endeavors to inspire creative expression and interpretation among its designers to illustrate the flexibility as well as the practicality of dynamic Islamic fashion while being the vehicle, voice and visualization of Islam in her true essence.

Jakarta Fashion Week

The third day of Jakarta Fashion Week (JFW) will start off with 2 Muslimwear segments presented by one of Indonesia’s most prominent fashion organizations – the Association of Indonesian Fashion Designers & Entrepreneurs (APPMI). Being recognized as the most populous Muslim country, Indonesia’s image is recurrently associated with this demographic and has raised many speculative assumptions. However, the lush, vibrant colors that dominated the runway are working slowly on breaking those stereotypes. A multibillion-dollar industry, Indonesian Muslimwear exports their products to other Muslim countries such as Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates. This is especially because many of the Indonesia’s Muslimwear designers are often regarded as trendsetters by their peers due to their out-of-the box illustration of an assumed to be conservative and oppressed manner of dressing.

Islamic Fashion Festival Charity Gala, Monaco

The fashion festival that was held in Monaco in 2010, however, sparked more controversy and ignited some very angry fires so much more than it did promote the message of finding the beauty in modesty. Organised by the afore mentioned IFF and endorsed by First Lady of Malaysia Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, the fashion show, which was graced with the presence of Prince Albert of Monaco made headlines all over the globe. More than that, however, the Muslim community was quick to express their displeasure at the choice of gowns and dresses showcased on that day. All of them claimed the collections to be too revealing and not in keeping with the practices of Islam.

Islamic fashion is fast becoming a lucrative business with the current market estimated to be worth more than US$96billion (RM302 billion) a year. To meet with the most important brands of the sector leaders and to have new business contacts and also to see the new 2012 summer collections you have to visit Islamic Fashion Festival.

Holy Smokes! - Kicking the Habit

Statistics show an estimated 10,000 Malaysian’s die from smoke-related diseases or conditions on a yearly basis. Thirty percent of smokers above the age of 30 suffer from a whopping 40 kinds of illnesses that include heart related problems and 57 different types of cancer. Also, every day, approximately 50 teenagers below the age of 18 pick up the habit adding to the 100,000 youths worldwide; becoming hardcore smokers in the process. Circa 1998, the Government introduced therapy for smokers in four major hospitals around the country, namely in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Ipoh and Seremban. KPJ Ampang Puteri has also joined this initiative by conducting a Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) programme for those who wish to curb this addiction. In this article, Care For Life looks into this method as well as other forms of treatment.

What is Nicotine Replacement Therapy?

Nicotine replacement therapy (universally abbreviated to NRT) is the counteractive administration of nicotine to the body by method other that tobacco – and thus eschews the damaging effects of smoking. It involves the use of products that provide low doses of nicotine but do not include toxins that are found in smoke. The aim of this form of therapy is to mitigate craving for nicotine and ameliorate the symptoms an individual might face when he/she stops using cigarettes and smokes less tobacco. Generally, this form of therapy benefits moderate-to-heavy smokers (individuals who smoke more than 15 cigarettes a day) the most. Studies have shown that the occurrence of smoking after undergoing nicotine replacement therapy is 1.5-2.0 times less than when therapy is not introduced.

Types of Nicotine Replacement Therapy

• Nicotine patches (transdermal nicotine systems)

Nicotine patches provide a measured dose of nicotine via the skin. The patch is placed on a dry area of skin without much hair, below the neck and above the waist (upper arm or chest). In this form of NRT, the individual is deterred from nicotine by switching to patches that contain a lower dosage of nicotine over a period of several weeks. These patches are available without a prescription from your doctor. Depending on your body-size and smoking habits, most smokers should start by using a full-strength pack (15-22 mg of nicotine) on a daily basis for approximately 4 weeks. This should be continued by use of a weaker patch (5-14mg of nicotine) for another 4 weeks.

• Nicotine gum (nicotine polacrilex)

Available over the counter without a prescription, nicotine gum is a fast-acting method of replacement in which nicotine is taken in via the mucous membrane of the mouth.  It is a preferred method of treatment, especially for those with sensitive skin, and are unable to make full use of a nicotine patch. Nicotine gum is highly recommended for smokers who smoke 25 or more cigarettes a day, feel the need to smoke within 30 minutes of waking up and have trouble refraining from smoking in restricted areas. One of the many advantages of using the nicotine gum is that it allows you to control the nicotine doses. Moreover, you can use it as and when you need to or on a fixed schedule during the day. Take note, that a fixed schedule has proved to be more effective, however, the as-needed approach will be favorable for when you need it most – when you experience cravings.

• Nicotine nasal spray

Another fast-acting method of treatment, the nasal spray treatment delivers nicotine to the bloodstream rapidly because it’s absorbed through the nose. This form of NRT however requires a doctor’s prescription. As per the other forms of treatment, the nasal spray lets you control your nicotine cravings and helps relieve withdrawal symptoms rather quickly. While smokers generally perfer the nicotine spray due to the ease of use, however, nicotine is addictive and thus, a smoker can transfer their dependence from cigaretter to the nasal spray. Hence, the need for prescription. Users are also strongly advised to use the nasal spray as per prescription only.

• Nicotine Inhalers

Nicotine inhalers, too, are only available by prescription from a doctor. Made up of a thin plastic tube with a nicotine cartridge inside, when you take a puff from the inhaler, the cartridge puts out a nicotine vapor. Unlike other inhalers such as the ones used by asthma patients, which delivers medicine to the lungs; this nicotine inhaler delivers most of the vapor to the mouth. This form of treatment is the most similar to actual smoking, which is widely appreciated by smokers in general. Thus far, this form of replacement therapy is the most expensive on the market. On another note, these inhalers should not be confused for electronic cigarettes, especially since those have not been clinically proven to be effective.

• Nicotine lozenges

Similar to the nicotine gum, nicotine-containing lozenges are available in 2 strengths: 2mg and 4mg, and can be purchase without a doctor’s prescription. Smokers are advised to choose their dose based on how long after waking up they usually have their first cigarette. It is recommended that smokers use these lozenges as part of a 12-week program.

Choosing the Right NRT

Although there is no actual evidence that one type of NRT is superior than the other, there are several factors that you should take into consideration when choosing which treatment you would like to embark on. When choosing your NRT look into your lifestyle and your smoking habits/patterns. For instance, do you only need to quench your nicotine craving or will you prefer something that will keep your hands and/or mouth busy?

Nicotine gums, lozenges and inhalers are substitutes you can put in your mouth that let you control your dosage and keep your cravings in check, however, nicotine gum may stick to dentures or other dental work, making it hard to chew. The gums and lozenges are also generally sugar-free. The nasal spray also works extremely quickly as and when you need it. On the other had, nicotine patches are more convenient as you only have to put it on once a day. However, if you are looking for more of a placebo effect, the inhaler allows you to simulate the use of cigarettes by holding and puffing the inhaler. Finally, studies have also shown that combing 2 types of NRT may work better than using just one single product. In that case, you may want to try using the patch for a steady dose of nicotine throughout the day and then using a fast-acting product i.e. nasal spray, inhaler, when the cravings become too overwhelming.

Other Methods

There are several other tools to aid in the process of quitting smoking that do not contain any forms of nicotine. Although some have acknowledged that these methods are useful, there is no strong proof that it improves the chances of quitting. These methods include hypnotherapy, acupuncture, and the use of smoking deterrents and/or herbal supplements. Although these methods have no scientific prove that it might work, certain individuals have found it useful. If you are interested in looking into these forms of treatment, discuss it with your doctor to see if it will be suitable for you.

Whichever method of treatment you choose to embark on, always remember to administer it at the recommended dosage only. There is a possibility, if you use a different dose or cease treatment prematurely that it will not work as expected. Whether you are a light smoker or a heavy smoker, it’s best to consult with your physician on a treatment plan that is tailored to suit your needs and match your lifestyle.

Under the Sea

Whether you’re taking a trip to local islands or on a family vacations to the Great Barrier Reef, Down Under, there is always fun in store for the whole family, adults and children alike. Especially with the abundance of beautiful nature in the form of coral reefs, schools of fish and other gorgeous sea creatures. In this article, I&P Living takes a dive into two very prominent beach/seaside vacation activities that promises fun for the whole family: Snorkeling and Scuba Diving.

Scuba Diving

SCUBA, originally the acronym for self-contained underwater breathing apparatus, is now a word in its own right. Scuba diving is a form of underwater diving in which a diver uses a scuba set to breathe underwater. Scuba divers carry their own source of breathing gas (compressed air) this allows them great freedom of movement. It also allows them to stay underwater significantly longer than breath-holding techniques employed during snorkeling and free diving. A diver usually moves underwater with swim fins attached to his/her feet. External propulsion can also come from and underwater vehicle, or even a sled pulled from the surface. You may find yourself migrating to a more specific type of dive. You may prefer a dive where you are able to float with the currents while relaxing and taking in the sights. On the other hand, getting the adrenaline rush as you move with hundreds of hammerhead sharks might be more to your liking.

Up close & personal with nature

Most people begin though recreational diving, as scuba diving can be performed purely for enjoyment. It also comes with a number of distinct technical disciplines to proliferate interest underwater, such as cave diving, wreck diving and deep diving. Recreational scuba diving does not have a consolidated certifying or regulatory agency, and is mostly self-regulated. There are numerous large diving organizations that train and certify divers and dive instructors, and many diving related sales and rental outlets require proof of diver certification from one of these organizations prior to selling or renting certain diving products or services.

Underwater Sightseeing

Being a rather popular recreational activity at tropical resorts and scuba diving locations, the primary appeal of snorkeling in the opportunity to observe underwater life without having to deal with the complicated equipment and training usually associated with scuba diving in an ultimately natural setting. It also has the advantage of appealing to individuals of all ages because of this simplicity.

Being non-competitive, snorkeling is considered more a leisure activity than a sport. It is generally accepted that a snorkeler’s outfit is made up of only a mask and a snorkel. As mentioned, snorkeling requires no special training. It only requires the ability to swim and breathe through the snorkel.  For safety reasons, however, most people are advised to obtain certain instructions, which cover equipment usage, basic safety, what to look for, and conservation instructions (corals and the likes are fragile and are easily damaged by divers and snorkelers) and a brief orientation from an experienced snorkeler. In popular snorkeling spots, like in tropical resorts or famous reef spots, the individuals who rent out the snorkeling gear, tour guide or even a resort-hired instructor, usually handle this part. Similar to scuba diving, it is highly recommended that one refrain from snorkeling along, but instead with a buddy, guide or tour group.  Snorkeling is possible in almost any body of water, however snorkelers are usually found in spots where there a minimal waves, warmer water, and something fascinating to see near the surface of the water.

Beautiful corals

Staying Safe

Some of the most threatening dangers to snorkelers are small inshore crafts such as jet skis, speedboats and the likes. This is because a snorkeler is usually submerged under water with only the snorkel tube visible above and since these small inshore crafts can access the same areas snorkelers do, the chance for an accident is very likely. More worrisome are the sailboats and windsurfers; the quiet propulsion systems they possess could mean that the snorkeler may be unaware of their presence. To help preventing this from happening, choose to wear bright or highly reflective colors/outfits. Another way is to employ dive flags to ease being spotted by boaters and other visitors.

As for snorkelers’ and divers’, their backs will be exposed to the sun for extended periods and burn badly even though submerged under water, without being noticed. Wearing the appropriate coverings such as a rash guard, a t-shirt, wetsuit and, not forgetting, sunblock, will alleviate the risk of getting sunburnt. Another concern is dehydration. It is highly recommended to hydrate yourself well before going in, especially if you intend to snorkel for several hours. Proper hydration can also mitigate the risk of cramps. Some snorkelers can experience hyperventilation, which can lead to “shallow water blackout”. This is why it is paramount to have a snorkeling buddy and to be aware of your buddy’s condition at all times.

Finally, where snorkeling or diving near coral reefs, always remember to exercise great care to avoid contact with delicate (and possibly sharp) coral and its poisonous inhabitants. Wear protective gloves at all times and be aware of your environment. Booties and surf shoes are particularly advantageous as they allow trekking over reefs uncovered by low tide, to drop offs or deeper waters of the outer reef. Also, for ecological reasons, contact with coral should be ultimately avoided because even boulder corals are fragile. A soft touch can instigate decades worth of growth to be undone in mere seconds, and the coral may never recover.

Most would concur that it's for the sheer enjoyment of experiencing the underwater world. This world is a vastly unexplored environment for many people. Be it the beautiful and brightly colored marine life or the thrill of watching the power and grace of a school of sharks or discovering a cave and even artifacts such as a sunken ship, it is incredibly addictive because there are endless dive sites around the world. Ultimately, it’ll be the perfect addition of memories to your family album!

What A Pain!

Headaches are defined as pain that occurs in the head and upper neck region of the body. It affects the entire head but sometimes only affects specific regions such as eyes or the temples. Accompanied by a variety of symptoms such as light sensitivity and/or nausea, the pain caused by headaches can either be extremely sharp or dull. Whatever the specifics, one thing is for certain – headaches are extremely common. In this issue of Care for Life, we look into pain managements methods in dealing with a more severe, chronic type of headache; the ultimate pain in the neck – migraines.

Are You Having Migraines?

A migraine is a severe, painful headache which is a result of a combination of blood vessel enlargement and the release of chemicals from nerve fibers that coil around these blood vessels. It is often preceded or accompanied by sensory warning signs such as flashes of light, blind spots, tingling in the arms and legs, nausea, vomiting, and increased sensitivity to light and sound. The excruciating pain that migraines bring can last for hours or even days. The symptoms of a migraine can present itself at any time before the headache occurs, during and even after the fact. Although not all migraines are alike, some of the more regular symptoms include moderate-severe pain confined to one side of the head, pulsing and throbbing pain in the head, increased pain during physical activity, nausea, vomiting and increased sensitivity to light and sound.

There are many triggers of a migraine headache. Some of the more popular causes of migraines are allergies and allergic reactions, bright lights, loud noises and certain strong odors or perfumes. Physical and emotional stresses as well as frequent changes in sleep patterns or irregular sleep have also been listed as precursors to a migraine bout. For certain individuals, consuming alcohol, smoking or exposure to smoke can trigger a bout of migraine. For women, menstrual cycle fluctuations, birth control pills and hormone fluctuations during menopause onset can also cause severe migraines. Other than that, foods containing tyramine (red wine, aged cheese, smoked fish and some beans), monosodium glutamate (MSG) or nitrates can also be triggers of migraines. Other “trigger-foods” include chocolate, nuts, peanut butter, avocados, bananas and fermented or pickled foods. If any of these symptoms and triggers sounds familiar to you, chances are you too are suffering from migraines.

Migraines affect specific regions such as temples

Dealing with the Pain

There are three main aspects of treatment: trigger avoidance, acute symptomatic control, and pharmacological prevention. Individuals who experience several moderate or severe migraine headaches should consider modifications of their lifestyle (trigger avoidance) which include practicing a regular sleep cycle, exercise regularly, avoid skipping meals/fasting, limit stress and employ relaxation techniques. You should also limit your caffeine consumption and begin to identify and avoid which foods usually trigger your migraine episodes. Keep a diary of this and share it with your doctor.

Regular exercise can help alleviate migraines

A number of analgesics are effective for treating migraines which include: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). An example would be Ibuprofen, which provides effective pain relief in about half of people. Also, a 1000 mg dose of aspirin could relieve moderate to severe migraine pain. Paracetamol/acetaminophen is also known to be effective for migraines. Simple analgesics combined with caffeine may help. Despite the fact that migraine sufferers are generally advised to limit their caffeine intake, it can be useful during an attack.

Prophylactic medications are a type of medication taken daily to reduce the regularity and length of migraine headaches. They are not supposed to be taken once a headache has begun. One example of prophylactic medication is beta blockers, which are class of drugs that block the effects of beta-adrenergic substances produced by the body such as adrenaline (epinephrine). By blocking the effects of adrenaline, beta-blockers relieve stress on the heart by decelerating the rate at which the heart beats. Although prophylactic medication may reduce the frequency and duration of migraine headaches, it will not eliminate migraine headaches completely.

Alternatively, Acupuncture is effective in the management of migraines. It appears to be more effective than routine care, with a smaller amount of adverse effects than prophylactic drug treatment. Chiropractic manipulation, physiotherapy, massage and relaxation might be useful for the prevention of migraine headaches.]
Being the first healthcare group to launch Pain Management Services in 2008, KPJ Healthcare (particularly KPJ Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital) has invested heavily in the field of pain management for the benefit of its patients. The dedication to pain management is yet another example of KPJ's commitment towards providing comprehensive healthcare services for its patients.

Healthy Beginnings - Insights into Postpartum Nutrition

Research shows that new-borns grow the fastest between the first 2 to 4 weeks. How you feed your newborn is the first nutrition decision you will make for your child. As such, the baby’s diet should contain all necessary nutrition to support and inspire optimal growth not only during those first weeks, but also for when he or she reaches the toddler stage. In this issue, Care For Life looks into the types of nutrition the baby needs, the ideal weight growth of a new-born as well as additional supplements and dietary requirements for breastfeeding mothers.

Breast or Bottle?

Not all women will prefer or even be able to breastfeed. Deciding to breastfeed or bottle feed a baby is usually based on the mother’s comfort level with breastfeeding and often includes other factors such as her lifestyle. The American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) recommends that babies be breastfed exclusively for about the first 6 months but it is vital to remember that your baby’s nutritional and emotional needs will still be met whether you decide to breastfeed or bottle feed.

Perhaps the most important advantage of breastfeeding is that breast milk is the perfect food for a human baby's digestive system. It contains the vitamins and minerals that a newborn needs, and all of its components — lactose, protein (whey and casein), and fat — are effortlessly digested by a newborn's immature system. Commercial formulas may try their best to imitate breast milk but they only manage to come close, never really producing the exact duplicate. Breast milk also contains easily absorbed iron as well as antibodies that help protect infants from a wide variety of infectious diseases, including diarrhoea.

Additionally, breastfeeding is also great for moms as it helps burn calories and aids in shrinking the uterus. Breastfeeding may also protect mom from breast and ovarian cancer. Not forgetting, it also meets a variety of emotional needs for both moms and babies as skin-to-skin contact can enhance emotional connections.

Postpartum Nutrition

The nutrition necessities for breast-feeding are similar to those for pregnancy. Just as when you were pregnant, it's imperative to eat well while you're breastfeeding, with plenty of wholesome fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein, and calcium-rich foods. However, a breast-feeding woman needs 200 more calories per day than she did during pregnancy, and it is important that the calories come from nutritious foods. Your need for fluid increases while you are breastfeeding. You may notice that you are thirstier than before.  Drink enough water and other fluids to quench your thirst. A usual recommendation is to drink a glass of water or other beverage every time you breastfeed.  Some beverages, such as soft drinks and fruit drinks, contain added sugars.  Limit your intake of these beverages.

Vegetables are essential to provide nutrients
for mom and baby when breastfeeding

Supplementary Nutrition for Infants

If a healthy mother is nursing a healthy infant, chances are he/she will not need any vitamins or nutritional supplements, the only exception being Vitamin D. Although breast milk does contain small amounts of Vitamin D, and Vitamin D is produced when the skin is exposed to sunlight, The AAP recommends that all breastfed babies receive vitamin D supplements within the first few days of life during the first two months continuing until the infant begins consumption of vitamin D-fortified formula or milk.
Supplements are usually unnecessary if the baby in on a formula diet as formula includes the right blend of vitamins, including vitamin D. Iron-fortified formula is also recommended for a baby's first year and should contain up to 12 mg/l of iron. Water, juice, and other foods are usually unnecessary during a baby's first 6 months. Breast milk or formula provides everything babies need nutritionally until they start eating solid foods.

Ideal Birth Weight

There are several factors that influence birth weight, which include size of parents, birth order and especially mother’s health during pregnancy. Babies are born with some extra fluid; therefore, it is a common occurrence for all babies to lose weight immediately after birth when that fluid is lost. Within a week, however, the new-born should regain his/her birth weight. For an average baby, a gain of about an ounce (30g) a day is normal. Babies also generally grow in height about 1 to 1.5 inches. Many newborns go through a period of escalated growth when they are 7-10 days old and again at 3 – 6 weeks.  At the end of the 5th months, most babies will be double their birth weight.

Babies generally lose weight after birth

KPJ Healthcare strives to provide newborns as well as their mothers with the best postnatal care with a string of trained professionals. All of who will be more than pleased to provide you with all the information and help you may need to care for mother and child.

Picnics - Entertainment Al Fresco

What could be a better to way to spend your weekends, if not by gathering your friends and family and going out for a day of games, good food and good company? With a history dating back to the 17th century, picnics have long been a pastime for adults and kids alike. In the next couple of pages, I&P Living takes a look at some lovely ideas for picnic foods, themes and locations that will have you out with your basket in hand and kids in tow before we can say croissant.

From Paris with Love
Picnics are a pleasure excursion at which a meal is eaten outdoors (al fresco) usually taking place in a beautiful landscape such as a park, beside a lake, at the beach or any setting with an interesting view. The term, pique-nique which first appeared in France in 1692, was used to describe a group of people dining in a restaurant who brought their own wine. For long a picnic retained the implication of a meal to which everyone contributed something. It became especially popular amongst newly enfranchised citizens after the French Revolution is 1789, when royal parks became open to the public for the first time, sparking the tradition of picnicking in parks.

Location! Location! Location!
Picking your picnic spot is almost certainly the most fundamental element of the planning, from beach-side barbecues to lakeside feasts, locale is the most important variable of any picnic experience. It is imperative to remember, not all picnic spots aren’t created equal and choosing the perfect one can make or break the picnic experience altogether. When deciding on a picnic spot, it is paramount to look into these areas to help pick the most ideal location. First, who will be attending? Just adults, or will there be children as well? Taking children along is where the tricky bit comes in; you must ensure the necessary bathroom facilities are easily available. If you are looking at something close by a body of water (i.e. lake, stream, beach), ensure that you have enough hands and eyes on board to keep an eye on the children. Secondly, are you looking for something a bit more outward bound or something located in a central position, like a city park? Remember, choosing a remote, far-off spot may sound like a good idea but you don’t want your attendees spending half the day looking for the spot. Nothing irks certain picnickers than having to share their spot with someone else. Do a little background checking to gauge how popular the site is and when peak period is to avoid disappointment and frustration. If all else fails, your very own backyard will provide you with the facilities and privacy everyone desires. Plus, you can even save cleaning up for later!

Remote areas are ideal for picnics

Planning the Menu
It definitely goes without saying that if there isn’t any food, you don’t really have a picnic anymore. Although the food is considered the backbone of the picnic, try not to lose your hair over it. The best idea is to keep it as simple as possible. No one goes to a picnic expecting to dive into a medium-rare steak or even to chuck all cutleries aside for some rice and chicken curry. Some easy picnic foods include finger sandwiches with tuna, egg or cucumber fillings. Next, it doesn't get much simpler than crackers and cheese at a picnic.  Whether you're into spray-on cheddar or craving a peppercorn spread, a nice portion of crackers and cheese is always solid picnic fare. Cole slaw is a classic side dish of the picnic and is also a lip-smacking dish containing vegetarian-friendly ingredients like carrots, cabbage, green onions and herbs. Though it's conventionally made with mayonnaise, there are other choices to spice things up, such as herb dressing and tofu mayonnaise. If you are planning on having a barbecue at the picnic, keep the options simple to cook and easy to eat, for example sausages, burgers or chicken wings. Nobody really wants to sit in with a knife and fork to devour that lamb chop however amazing your marinade is. Whatever you do, do not forget dessert! Go in the direction of cakes and tarts and a fruit platter to keep everything well balanced of your fun day out.
Vegetarian-friendly skewers

Spice It Up!
Although the idea of a picnic in itself adds excitement to the meal and will always bear promise of a wonderful time but if you are looking for a truly different experience there are a number of unique ways to take your picnic to the next level. Themed picnics and picnic games are the perfect way to do it. If you would rather not go all out with an elaborate theme, a Colour Themed Picnic is the way to go. Just assign an agreed upon colour for everyone to wear (don’t forget the blankets too!) be it all red, white, black etc. That way even if you lose someone, it will make it so much easier to spot him or her. Another great idea is to organize a Fun n’ Games Picnic, which is ultimately all about picnic games. Some good suggestions are: frisbees, bubbles, kites, remote control airplanes, footballs, beach balls, volleyball sets, etc. Kids will love this one! Moving along, who says an all-girls outing has to revolve around shopping or sipping cocktails in nightclub? Plan a Girls-Only Picnic with sparkling cider, plenty conversation and girlie foods like finger sandwiches and chocolate-covered strawberries. Add a little more fun to it and make sure everyone wears a pretty summer dress for an all-inclusive experience. Other themes like Parisian Picnic, Italian Picnic and Spanish Picnic would be ideal for an all-adult picnic, each theme with its array of local delicacies and beverages.

Everything you need for an All-Girls Picnic –
Sparkling Juice, fruits and a shaded patch of grass

to catch up with the girlfriends.

Some useful tips in packing your picnic – avoid squishing; remember to always start with heavier foods and items at the bottom, followed by the lighter one on top. Keep it cool – freeze juice boxes the night before, that way by the time you get to your picnic it you’ll have yummy slushies for everyone. Avoid sticky, messy food like sticky cakes, caramel apples and so on. They can be a real nuisance to transport and before you know it, the bugs will be having a glorious picnic instead!

Good Living - The Andrew Suvalsky Inspiration

Andrew Suvalsky - Jazz musician cum interior designer

In a swift career shift in 1998, Andrew Suvalsky left the music scene for the Big Apple to work with internationally renowned interior designer, Benjamin Noriega Ortiz. Now, his firm, Andrew Suvalsky Designs, offers clean, fresh and intimate full interior architectural and design services dedicated to creating all-embracing visual stories that divulge the soul of a home, drawing inspiration from the unique makings of the dwelling and the people living there. Blending the many elements of architectural embellishments, layout and a palate of sophisticated colors, Suvalsky applies his copious experience to conjure the dreamiest ideas with maximum optimization of space.

Imperative Styles

One of the paramount challenges for Suvalsky is finding the equilibrium between comfort, beauty and function. Suvalsky prides himself on the realistic approach he takes to design although feelings and aesthetics are some of his foremost influences. Determined never to forgo beauty for the practical or vice versa, he believes that design should not be a just a two-dimensional pretty face but should be made to be comfortable and livable as well. Style is a combination of vision and artistry. If you have a wide room, accentuate it with neutral paint colors and contrasting furniture. Consider, also, lining the edges of the room with the furniture to allow easy traffic flow through main corridors. Arranging furniture is more of an art than a science, so try a few different arrangements on your paper floor plan before attempting the real thing. High traffic areas can spell trouble for top-heavy lamps and other tabletop ornaments. Be sure that the shade of the lamp does not extend beyond the edge of the table. Additionally, multifunctional furniture can provide invaluable benefits. Futons are ideal for small apartments, since they serve two functions - sleeping and seating.

Positioning furniture along the edges
can help with traffic flow.

The Suvalsky Method
Suvalsky’s method is systematic; emphasizing the adage that design is a process. No matter what look he tries to produce, he believes that it should always be inviting and authentic which he strives to achieve by forming personal and intimate connections with his clients. One of his favorite parts of living in a big city is that everywhere he looks there he finds inspiration, such as the dramatic outline and colors of tall buildings set against the sky, which he later incorporates in his designs of interior living spaces. Some visible design features include solid colors with contrasting properties against blank slates of walls and floor. Use minimal number of accent pieces for a clean and open look for visual charm. To avoid your accent wall/floor looking like a cliché technique, Suvalsky advises to avoid choosing a color that exists within the room’s original palate. Try for instance to use a color that bridges the fabrics and other wall colors and the exciting, accent wall.

and accentuate other elements of the room

Keeping it Clean

Andy also loves things that feel clean and fresh and finds that the easiest way to do this is via the liberal use of whites. He stresses that it has to be used with real intention; otherwise it might end up looking generic or unfinished. If you love the sleek, modern kitchens you see in IKEA or even in magazines, the solution is to use white on everything: cabinets, countertops, walls and ceilings. Place a few accessories, each sitting on an oasis of white to further accentuate the room. For ease of maintenance, shiny is always better as sheen is more washable than matte finishes. Tip: Try to stay away from dull laminates and matte colours.

Frontyard Zen - Exploring Oriental Landscaping

Landscaping is the activity of transforming visible features of a piece of land while incorporating several elements, for example, flora and fauna, landforms and terrains and other elements such as buildings and fences. One of the core features of I&P is the focus on the aesthetic values incorporated into its townships. In this issue, I&P Living looks eastward for a charming aspect of landscaping – Japanese Gardens.

Antiquity
Japanese Gardens are traditional gardens that craft miniature idealized landscapes in a very intangible and stylized manner. The evolution of the gardens can be seen across the various historical periods in Japan beginning with the Heian period (794-1185). Developed under the influence of Chinese gardens, the Japanese gardens also carried with it influences Chinese philosophies of Daoism and Amida Buddhism. However, by the Edo period (1615-1857), Japanese gardens developed a distinctive aesthetic value, encompassing Japanese materials and cultures.

Aesthetics
The gardens are designed as a miniature idealized view of nature. Large rocks are used to symbolize mountains and ponds or small streams are used to represents bodies of water such as the sea or a lake. Miegakure (literally ‘hide and reveal’) is the art of concealment which is employed especially in promenade gardens, where bamboo or tree groves are hidden behind hills to be discovered by the visitor who follows the winding path around or through the garden. A more intriguing aesthetical element is Shakkei or borrowed scenery. Smaller gardens are designed to integrate features outside the garden such as hill, trees or temples; adding to the scenery and increasing the ostensible size of the garden. Asymmetry also contributes to the beauty of the gardens as they are not laid on straight axes. Features are positioned to be seen from a diagonal by integrating vertical elements, such as buildings, with horizontal features, such as water.

Garden Styles
There are several types of Japanese Gardens, the most prominent being Karensansui (dry mountain and water gardens) a dry rock garden with white sand used to epitomize water. Gravel and rocks are age old symbolization for denoting sacred areas in Japan and are essential in facilitating meditation. The Roji or ‘dewy ground', is the garden, through which one passes to the chashitsu for the tea ceremony and it generally fosters an air of simplicity. usually divided into an outer and inner garden, with a machiai (waiting arbor), a typical Roji includes features such as the tsukubai (ablution basin), tōrō (lantern), tobi ishi (stepping stones), and wicket gates. Kaiyu-shiki-teien or Promenade gardens (go-round style) are designed to complement houses that are commonly modeled after the tea house. These gardens were meant to be perceived by following a path clockwise around the lake from one prudently designed scene to another. Finally, there is the tsuboniwa, literally meaning pot garden. This type of gardening is popular within areas fashioned by the junctions of building or between buildings. More often than not, they are shady, and obtain a good deal of the run-off from neighboring roofs during rain and snow. This cool, damp, shadiness is mirrored in the predominantly shiny, dark-green flora frequently encountered in tsuboniwa.

Building Your Own Japanese Garden
There are several important steps you must take before building your own Japanese garden. The first and probably most important is to consult with a contractor. It is important to remember that the design should suit the site and not vice versa. This is also to ensure that the land is viable for landscaping and that water sources are available should you choose to incorporate a pond or mini-waterfall. It’s best to pick a piece of land with hills and slopes, which are analogous with most Japanese gardens, this will definitely add to its charm. Next, you should pick a theme you would like to design your garden after. This will help you in choosing which elements to include in your garden such as the type of gravel and stones, which plants to purchase i.e. bamboo, moss, cherry blossom trees, the size of the pagodas, pavilions, and what type of sculptures (stone lanterns, stone walls etc.) you should include. Placing the plants and elements in the planned area and imagining them ‘in-situ’ is a critical step in the designing and building process as it helps you envision what the garden will look like and allow for you to change the positioning of elements and plants if necessary.

A few useful tips in building your own Japanese garden - remember that every element should reflect the pure essence of nature. For example, you would never find a square pond or lake in the wild; therefore you should not include one in your garden. Waterfalls are the best option, fountains – not so much. Finally, don’t forget to ensure balance or ‘sumi’. Not solely for aesthetics reasons but to attain spiritual equilibrium as well.

Leighton Offshore

Engineering success with strategic growth

Australia’s Leighton Offshore, a subsidiary of the Leighton Group, Australia’s largest project development and contracting group  launched its new engineering business; a fully-owned subsidiary, DPS Leighton Engineering Sdn Bhd (LE). The company was launched in Malaysia recently to provide engineering, procurement management and construction (PMC) services to the oil and gas industry. Along with a new logo, the company has officially opened its new office at G Tower on Jalan Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur.

The company said it developed its detailed engineering and PMC arm after acquiring the former oil & gas engineering consulting business, DPS Bristol (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

LE will also be providing technical, procurement, and management support to DPS Consultant Malaysia Sdn Bhd which provides oil and gas consultancy services in Malaysia. Leighton Offshore CEO Peter Cox said, “We are growing our oil & gas business internationally from our headquarters here in Malaysia, and strengthening our engineering and PMC capacity is a core element in our growth strategy.”

“We have made a business decision to focus our engineering and EPIC capability here in Kuala Lumpur, where there is a wealth of oil and gas experience and a competitive engineering talent base for oil and gas projects, and we are proud to be bringing world class projects, such as the Sealine Project to be performed here supporting investment and new jobs in Malaysia,” Cox said.

Sealine Project in Iraq

Cox has announced that Leighton Engineering was awarded its first contract valued at approximately USD 10 million, in October, to undertake the detailed engineering of two offshore platforms for the USD 518 million Sealine Project for Iraq’s South Oil Company. The project is being managed here in Kuala Lumpur by a dedicated project team from Leighton who will also assist in the procurement and follow on engineering for the two platforms. The Sealine project involves not only the design, construction and installation of the two offshore platforms but also a 75 kilometer 48” pipeline and a single point mooring system as well and follows on from the USD 800 million ICOEEP projects currently carried out by Leighton Offshore.

They have also signed an engineering, procurement, and construction contract with Iraq’s South Oil Company to install 120km of onshore and offshore pipelines and three single point mooring units in the Persian Gulf, offshore Iraq.

The scope of work to be carried out under the contract includes the installation and commissioning of two 48-inch diameter parallel pipelines, with 10km onshore and 40km offshore, which will link the new Fao onshore terminal to the new single point moorings (SPMs). In addition, Leighton will install and commission approximately 20-km of infield pipelines and the shore crossing for a third pipeline to be installed during future expansions. On a whole, the project comprises; installation of SPMs complete with subsea pipeline and manifolds, fabrication and installation of a subsea valve manifold and dredging works to achieve pipeline burial.

The fast-tracked project, with a duration of only 20 months from contract award to full commission, will provide enhanced export facilities from the Fao Terminal near Al Basrah, and form a major part of the South Oil Company’s strategic redevelopment programme for Iraq. The two platforms will commence fabrication in March 2012. It will be installed in two campaigns, one in 2012 and another in the 1st quarter of 2013. Leighton Offshore will use its vessels, Eclipse, Stealth and Mynx, to complete the project. The contract forms part of the Iraq Crude Oil Export Expansion Project which is developing offshore loading facilities to enable export capability of 4.5 MMbbl/d of oil.

Already employing some 200-300 engineers here in Malaysia and with offices in Tanzania and the UAE, Cox also went on to say that, the reason for setting up a base here in Kuala Lumpur is the expertise and experience offered by the work force here. According to him, Malaysia is a very mature oil and gas market which offers plenty of experienced talents to tap into and it is a very cost-effective engineering base as opposed to other places which are cheaper but offer a less experienced workforce.

LE is certified ISO 1800 company as well as ISO 9000 certified, in accordance to environmental standards. The company’s impressive HSE track records in terms of safety of its projects, is tracked through safety studies at the concept stage right through detailed engineering in accordance to all oil and gas company standards as required by ISO 1800 certification. LE considers safety in two areas; the technical integrity safety of the plant that they design as well as the methodology in terms of constructing the module.

“The Leighton Intention in Malaysia is to transform Malaysian engineers from a conservative point of view which has become a pure detailed designed engineer and transform them to a more constructive engineer who is able to perform interface, construction and pre-imposed commissioning. This will bring up the Malaysian engineers standards to a much higher, tier-1 acceptance.”

Media Camp for La Salle Youths

TWO weeks ago, Cahayasuara Communications Centre organised a four-day, media-related youth camp in Cameron Highlands for 30 members of the Catholic Students Society (CSS) of SMK La Salle Petaling Jaya.

Held from June 3 to 6 during the school holidays, the Annual Leadership Camp was conducted at the Infant Jesus Convent in Cameron Highlands, Perak.

It was not the usual kind of fun teenagers normally engage in during their term break.

The main aim of the Cahayasuara Media Youth Camp was to build new leaders through the media, said CSS president Mark Luhan, who added that they chose Cameron Highlands for its clean atmosphere and fresh air.

On the first day, after arriving at the convent at 3pm, the participants watched the movie Ice Age and then analysed the features and forms of entertainment used by the animators.

The next day started with a session on how and why the media uses music video clips.

They were then divided into three groups and given time to rehearse and produce their own music video clips, before presenting them in live performances.

After that, the group went into Brinchang town and took note of signs, symbols and services for their analyses.

They were treated to another movie, The Matrix Reloaded, which they analysed as well.

The final day involved a session on media work in which the participants debated on the topic "'The Media Influences Our Choices".

After the opposition side won, everyone sat together to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the arguments with the camp facilitators.

The facilitators then organised a session at which the campers explained how they benefited from the camp.

Two third-formers, Ronald Reyes and Luke Ashwin, both agreed that the camp was not just about having fun but being exposed to new and exciting experiences.
